Little Free Libraries
The Little Free Library® program is a nonprofit initiative that promotes literacy, community, and the love of reading by encouraging people to “take a book, leave a book.” Small, often handcrafted book-sharing boxes are placed in neighborhoods, parks, and public spaces, where anyone can freely borrow or contribute books. Started in 2009, the movement has grown into a global network of millions of books exchanged each year, fostering connections among neighbors and making books accessible to all.
- Little Free Libraries (LFL) have global recognition;
- The LFL organization offers some fantastic resources, including how to start a one and sources of free books;
- LFL tend to have a long life and are not “one and done” projects;
- LFL locations are listed on the organization’s website with maps! There are currently over 200,000! This can actually draw people to your Grange Hall.
Book Exchange Boxes
We’ll be using the term “Book Exchange Box” (BEB) to describe libraries that are not registered with the Little Free Library® Program. The fundamentals are the same and BEBs should include a label indicating who is sponsoring the box and contact information. Ideally, someone should be monitoring the box to make sure it is properly maintained and stocked. While it’s not an official title, your Grange could have a librarian appointed by the master/president.
