The Maine Legislature annually recognizes one student from each county who is currently pursuing or planning to pursue education at a two- or four-year degree-granting Maine college or technical school. Through the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME), these awards are given to Maine resident high school seniors or full- or part-time post-secondary students accepted to or enrolled in accredited Maine colleges for graduate or undergraduate degrees.

The 2022-2023 application cycle is now open and scholarship applications are being accepted until the deadline of May 1, 2022. Scholarship awards of $1,000 will be given to one student in each of Maine’s counties (16 total). Only complete applications will be considered, which should include the following:

  • A completed 2022-2023 Maine Legislative Memorial Scholarship application
  • An essay (make sure the applicant’s name appears on all pages)
  • Submission of transcripts, recommendations, and a 2022-2023 Student Aid Report (SAR)
  • College students should include both college and high school transcripts
  • All transcripts should also indicate graduation date or anticipated graduation date
  • A copy of a high school diploma or equivalent

Recipients selected from applications submitted by the May 1, 2022 deadline will be selected and notified in the fall. Notifications are not sent to those applicants not selected. It’s important that students submit the 2022-2023 free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in time to receive the Student Aid Report (SAR) back from the federal government. The SAR with Expected Family Contribution (EFC), income information, and the number of family members must be sent to FAME and postmarked by the deadline during the application period.

Youth Report – February 2022

By Sherry Harriman, MSG Master

As you have heard, the Northeast Regional Combined Leaders, Lecturers and Youth Conference scheduled for March to be hosted in Maine was canceled due to Covid concerns.  This conference was to include the Regional Youth Contests (Grange Baseball, Public Speaking – [Prepared Speech; Impromptu Speech; Grange Commercial; Youth Ambassador/Young Patron Prepared Speech], Sign-A-Song, and Grange Ritual Contest [Code Reading]).  Youth Contests are open to all Grange members: Youth 14-21; Young Adults 22-35; and Youth Alumni 36+.   See NG Youth Program Book, which has been posted to our website for complete information, details, and rules. Regional Conferences are open to anyone who would like to attend, at your own expense.

At a recent zoom meeting of the Northeast Connection (State Masters/Presidents &  Overseers/VPs), we discussed the regional contests and how we can make that happen.  The discussion included the possibility of a one-day in-person and/or zoom event.  It was decided to have a zoom meeting with the NE Presidents and NE Youth Directors to make a decision and plan an event.  As an alternative option, participants from our region have been invited to participate at another region as a possibility.

Before we start the discussion I would like to know if anyone is interested in participating or attending?    I would like a response within the month at:  SHarriman@twc.com or my home phone.

Is there interest in participating in the contests?

  • The 2022 Northeastern Conference has been cancelled by the host state Maine. In order to allow members in this region the opportunity to still partake in a regional conference they are being invited to attend the Eastern Regional Conference in Delaware. Youth and Junior Grange members who are competing in the different regional contests will be judged according to their region. Best of show winners from the Eastern and Northeast region will be allowed to move on to National Convention.
  • The Mid-Atlantic (DE, PA, NJ, WV, MD, DC) and Southeast (NC, SC, VA, TN, FL) regions have now combined to one regional conference that will now be referred to as the Eastern Conference.  This regional conference will now be held the third weekend of June, June 17-19, 2022 in Delaware.  (Details will be provided when available.)

I will keep you informed of the plans.

Scholarship Page Added to Website!

by Walter Boomsma, MSG Communications Director

It’s great to be able to announce this sort of news on the first day of Grange Month, 2021! We now have a special “about” page on the website listing scholarship information at the National, State, and local/community level! The Grange supports our youth and education!

We shall advance the cause of education by all just means within our power.

Grange Declaration of Purposes

I have endeavored to include as many Grange-related scholarships as possible. This page will be dynamic, in the sense that we can always add more. If you are aware of a scholarship that is missing, please let me know. My hope is that we will be able to update the page at least annually in the early spring, particularly with application deadlines. Please note, however, that the FMI contact link or information should be used for questions about specific scholarships and eligibility requirements.

This page is part of an ongoing effort to provide resources and information to Granges, Grangers, and our communities. The “About” page includes links to a directory of Granges, a directory of state officers, membership information and benefits, scholarships, Grange history, the Maine Grange Farmers’ Initiative, and Grange-related books and videos. There’s also a separate page of Resources for Grangers that includes video interviews of “inspiration and information” regarding Grange activities, projects, and programs.

We recognize that education is a continuing process. We encourage all to continue their education through adult education classes, by continued reading, observation and such other methods as may be available, including radio, television and the Internet.

Grange Declaration of Purposes

We’re doing our part! Thanks to the many who contributed to this new page with encouragement and information. Keep it coming!
