Garland Grange Supper/Education
Starting at 4:00 pm, Garland Grange will host Chris Hadsel from Curtains Without Borders. Curtains Without Borders is a conservation project dedicated to documenting and preserving historic painted scenery. The painted curtains are found in town halls, Grange halls, theaters and opera houses. They were created between 1890 and 1940, although on rare occasions, pieces painted after 1940 are also included in their inventories. For more information about Curtains Without Borders, please visit their website at www.curtainswithoutborders.org.
Chris is the Director of this project, but she is also the author of the book, Suspended Worlds, which features many local curtains and drapes including the Grand Drape which hangs in front of the stage at the Garland Grange Hall. This will be an opportunity to view Garland’s historic curtain which many people have not seen because it is often put up for events where the stage is utilized. Chris will talk about what makes Garland Grange’s curtain so unique. She will also have copies of her book available for sale and signing.
Starting around 4:30 pm, Janet Sawyer from Dover Cove Farmers’ Market and Erin Callaway from Healthy Communities will be on hand to discuss the use of SNAP or EBT benefits to purchase local fresh fruits and vegetables. Garland Grange has been a supporter of Dover Cove Farmers’ Market for several years. Also, with the agricultural roots of the Grange, we are happy to support this educational piece to locally grown food. Janet and Erin will be available throughout the supper to provide educational material to the community.
Starting at 5:00 pm, Garland Grange will serve its monthly Public Supper. The menu of August 14 is Barbeque- including Barbeque Pork, Chicken, and Beef, Baked Beans, Macaroni and Cheese, coleslaw, pasta salad, homemade bread and desserts. The price is $7.00 for adults, $3.00 for children ages 5 to 12, under age 5 is FREE and the meal is ALL YOU CAN EAT. Takeout is available. These public suppers are a monthly fundraiser for Garland Grange. This historic community minded organization has needed many funds to maintain and preserve the historic building for community use. Over the past year, Garland Grange has used funds raised from their public suppers to drill a new well and install a new heating system. The building has been used to support the community for events historically such as Town Meeting, Recreation Department Christmas and Easter parties for local children, Garland Days events, plus rentals for weddings, birthday parties, and more.
This season of Public Suppers, there has been a Family Contra Dance taking place monthly at the Grange hall following the meal. However, due to scheduling conflicts with both the band and the caller, there will be no Contra Dance following the August Public Supper. Contra Dances will continue following the supper in September as part of Garland Days on Saturday, September 12
