-Grange Opposes Governor’s Dept. of Agriculture Merger Plan-
Augusta, Maine - The Executive Committee of the Maine State Grange recently convened and adopted policy to oppose Governor John Baldacci’s plan to merge the Departments of Agriculture, Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Conservation and Marine Resources.
After the resolution was adopted, James Owens, Master (President) of the Maine State Grange stated that, “The Maine State Grange has for many years supported agriculture in the State of Maine. We believe that the continued well being of our citizens is sustained by our agricultural base and diluting the Department of Agriculture will not be in the best interest of anyone."
To: Senator Rotundo, Representative Fischer, members of the Joint Standing Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs
From: Steven Verrill – Maine State Grange
The Maine State Grange wishes to speak in favor of LD 426.
The Grange was one of the first nationwide farm family organizations in the U.S. In the early years of the Grange our halls were the center of activity in many rural towns. The Grange played a very important role in the educational, social, cultural and economic well being of rural Mainers. Many of our halls are still used for town meetings and other public and private gatherings. There are 168 Granges in Maine today and 155 own their own buildings.

From: Steven Verrill – Maine State Grange - President
The Maine State Grange wishes to express its support for LD 1070 an Act to Create the Maine Agriculture in the Classroom Council. We believe that teaching our school age youth about the importance of our nations food and fiber system is of primary importance to our nations security and well being. With a smaller percentage of our population now directly involved with food and fiber production, it is imperative that all people understand the need for good stewardship and foster a better understanding of issues that effect our food and fiber production.
