There appears to be several versions of the recipe for the Blueberry Banana Loaf floating around, including one that omits a line of instruction. The recipe in the official CWA Program Book is complete, and that book can be downloaded from the MSG website. The confusion appears to be in step one. The complete, correct instruction (as shown in the program book) is:

 Step #1

Heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease and flour bottoms only of three 6”x3 ½” inch loaf pans. In large bowl, combine sugar and oil; beat well. Add bananas, applesauce, vanilla and eggs; blend well.

(This was edited a bit for clarity.) The program book also includes complete rules for entering, including contest deadline.

Officers and Directors, please note: This might be a good opportunity to remind everyone that posting your program book, contest rules, etc. on the website can avoid a lot of confusion and make the information widely available. Do not assume I have your information.. Program books or lengthy instructions and forms are best sent electronically (a PDF file is perfect) as an attachment to an email addressed to webmasteratmainestategrangedotorg  (webmasteratmainestategrangedotorg)  . If you have submitted your program books and other information to the site, please send any changes and corrections when you make them. We can save time and avoid confusion and frustration with a program of active communication.

THe new cookbooks have finally arrived! Over 450 recipes are included in this hard cover loose leaf binder. There is also an easel with which you may stand up the book while  cooking.  The same cookbook is available on CD.

The price is $15 per book and $10 per CD. If your Grange would like to order some, the book can be purchased for $14 and the CD for $9–your Grange can sell them and make $1 per item.

Granges that wish to purchase cookbooks and CDs can contact the State Grange Office and the requested items will be ready for you to pick up at State Grange session.

Brothers and Sisters,

We were saddened by the death of Sister Clara Gartley on August 19, 2011. She was a Past Lady Assistant Steward of the Maine State Grange and Past Chief Junior Deputy.

The cookbooks have arrived. They are $15 each or a CD of the cookbook for $10. Each Grange has received a letter on this along with the prices that they can purchase these products. They will make wonderful Christmas gifts.

As I write this, I am preparing to attend a legislative conference at National Grange Headquarters in Washington, D.C. More on this when I return.

National Grange meets in Tulsa, Oklahoma, November 8 – 12. If you want to take a trip out west, this will be a good opportunity for you to enjoy the National session and take the Seventh Degree if you have not already done so. I have applications for the Degree of Ceres. Let me know if you need one. The fee for the degree is $20.00. Remember that you must know the Annual Password as well as the Sixth Degree word to enter the Conferral.

My wife Dianne and I are publishing a new cookbook (Maine Locavore Cookbook) to feature Maine food and to be used as a fundraising opportunity for charitable and nonprofit organizations once it is published.

We are now soliciting recipes and would love to have recipes submitted by Maine Grange members and hope that you can assist us in notifying them of the opportunity to submit their favorite recipes for Maine foods. Hopefully you will find it worthwhile to publish our Call for Recipes so that your members can respond.

We could go on and on about why we have undertaken this project, what led to our interest in great local Maine food, what locavore really means, how locavore activities got started, our favorite recipes, etc., etc., but all that is explained on our new web site www.locavorecookbooks.com.

Please take the time to check out our web site and feel free to contact us with any comments, ideas, suggestions, etc. and to submit your favorite Maine recipe (via online form, email, fax or snail mail). The recipe submitter’s contact will be published with each recipe if desired. We look forward to receiving recipes from Maine State Grange members and freinds.

We urge you to forward this email to your members, friends, colleagues and Maine food producers who enjoy cooking (and eating) good Maine food and might want to submit a recipe.

We look forward to hearing from you and to working with you to make this a fun and exciting project. We are excited about it and hope that you will be also. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, suggestions, comments, etc.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Al & Dianne Keene

The cookbook committee is currently working on assembling everyting. They are in need of a few more recipes. If each Grange could send just one more recipe, we would have enough for a good sized book. You can download the Recipe Collection Sheet right here and return it to Maine State Grange, 146 State Street, Augusta ME 04330

Here is a message received through our Valley Grange Website:

I was looking for a grange cookbook–dont know what the cover looks like but it has over 350 pages.  My mom had one and it is in rough shape. (She passed away in 2001.) There is a recipe by a member of your grange Mrs. Merwin Lander (Master’s wife). Page 99 has a recipe for five minute fudge. The recipes are from granges all over the United States. Thanks,

Lori

Okay, folks… does anybody know anything about this cookbook… or better yet have one? It sounds like it might have been published by National Grange based on the fact the recipes are from all over the United States. Any help or information you can offer can either be entered here using the comment feature (click the button in the upper righthand corner of this post that either says “no responses” or number of comments) or you can email me   (webmasteratmainestategrangedotorg)  and I will forward it to Lori. Let’s show her how helpful Grangers are!
