Corliss

By Christine Corliss, Community Service/FHH Director

Well, everyone, it is summer.  Yippee!!! Not to put a damper on things but let me remind you August is right around the corner.  Time to start thinking about those Community Service Books and activity sheets.  Remember the goal this year is 50% participation. That means we need about 65 Granges to send in either a completed activity sheet or a Community Service Book.  Please contact me if you need help filling out the sheet or setting up the book. Let’s work together to get those submissions completed.  Submissions (sheets or books) can be mailed directly to my home at 162 Center Road, Lebanon, ME 04027.  Please have them mailed so they arrive no later than August 15.

Also, as of now we have only received two nominations for Police Officer/EMT & Fire Fighter/Educator of the Year.  Please consider submitting a nomination for a deserving person.  All of the required forms can be found on the Maine State Grange Website due to our wonderful webmaster.  Let’s have fun when doing community service projects.  One suggestion for completing the books or activity sheets is to team up with your lecturer and make it part of a program. It is great fun and is sure to get a few good laughs when you reminisce about things that went on during the event.

Family, Health & Hearing Note

Who has been keeping track of what they have been doing for FH & H?  Remember there is another contest to give back some funds to subordinate Granges.  Just make sure to fill out the required form and mail back to me by August 15 for a chance for your Grange to win $50.00. The committee enjoys giving back to Subordinate Granges—it’s what we’re supposed to do!

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, Psoriasis Awareness Month, Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month, Cataract Awareness Month and Family Fun Month.  Here are a few ideas to invite the community into your Grange:

  • Invite a herbalist who works with lotions and herbs to help relieve Psoriasis and Eczema to speak at your Grange and invite the community.
  • Schedule a family game or reading night at your Grange.  Set up tables and pick children’s books for each table and do any activity around the book.  For example, you could use The Sunflower Garden by Janice May Urdy and have the children plant sunflower seeds. You could have a Granger reading each story in different places around the building.  Again, think fun!
